At CeMi, translation is not an add-on to discovery: it is a central driver to our research. We exist to understand how materials, proteins and cells interact within the cellular microenvironment, and to use that knowledge to engineer and control cell behaviour in ways that lead to better healthcare or industrial benefit. Our work brings together academics with expert clinical insight, linking to biomedical science and medicine in the UK and internationally.

This translational mindset already runs through the Centre. We are developing engineered microenvironments to promote tissue regeneration and model tissues for use as testbeds for drug discovery and diagnostics. Our key areas of expertise; mechanobiology, biomaterials, hydrogels, 3D bioprinting, microfluidic systems, AI and medical devices all have potential to deliver impact beyond academia. Crucially our team spans the breadth of biology and engineering, enabling ambitious thinking to deliver the industrial and healthcare solutions of tomorrow.

Through key research programmes such as MAINSTREAM, we are leveraging engineering technologies towards the manufacturing of stem cells for regenerative medicine, immunotherapy and cancer. Through HEALIKICK, we are combining advanced materials approaches to create next-generation bone graft materials for major defects. Through StemNiche and Mechanomeds, we are building new, human-relevant models that exploit materials and mechanobiology to target cancer diagnosis and future therapy.

We now intend to grow this translational mission with urgency and ambition. We want CeMi to be recognised not only for outstanding fundamental science, but for turning that science into scalable clinical technologies, industrially relevant models, and routes to real patient benefit. Building translation as a pillar means strengthening our partnerships, expanding clinically connected projects, and making impact a defining feature of CeMi’s future.
