A Special Visitor at CeMi: Eva the Dog Returns!

The Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment (CeMi) welcomed back a very special guest – Eva the dog – whose story remains one of the most memorable milestones in the centre’s history.

Several years ago, Eva faced the prospect of losing her leg due to a severe injury leading to infection. Thanks to pioneering research carried out at CeMi, her limb was saved using innovative biomaterial techniques. This achievement not only transformed Eva’s life but also made national headlines, shining a spotlight on the real-world impact of the centre’s research.

On 13th November 2025, Eva and her owners, Fiona and Graeme, returned to CeMi, giving the team the chance to see first-hand the lasting difference that science can make beyond the lab. Her visit was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: translating cutting-edge research into meaningful outcomes that improve lives.

The research behind Eva’s recovery involved developing advanced biomaterials that mimic the extracellular matrix, enabling bone regeneration and healing in ways that were previously unimaginable. This approach continues to influence regenerative medicine and the centre are working to bring these advances into human trail.

We are grateful to Eva’s family for sharing this milestone with us and reminding us of the human (and canine!) impact of scientific innovation.
